Founded in 2016, Vista Peak Community Garden has grown over the years. What started as a field of grass has become thirty plots, thriving perennial beds, and host to gardeners over the seasons. Located at Vista Peak High School in Northeast Aurora Colorado, it is an incredibly open full sun and high wind location. Vista Peak teacher Colleen Dobson manages school plots for students to learn. The garden welcomes students into the garden during the school year and throughout the summer. Students learn the importance of starting seeds, planting, composting, as well as cleaning out the garden bed at the end of the season. Vista Peak Community Garden is grateful for the members who have been here since the start of the garden. We get joy from seeing beginner gardeners learn how to garden in Colorado, as well as seasoned gardeners who can help a new gardener thrive. Since 2018, we have held an annual seed swap among the members, and in 2023 we added seed starting to the swap! In late 2023 we introduced our first garden team and will continue to add garden teams in future seasons. To interact with the community outside of the garden, Vista Peak holds workdays throughout the growing season. This brings in countless individuals, it is neat to be able to teach so many people the joy of gardening. Our workdays are interactive, we spend time with each volunteer to learn a little about them as well as the experience they may have in the garden. Our volunteers helped us lay seventeen tons of breeze in our walkways in the 2023 garden season! At the end of our workdays, we sign paperwork, and volunteers leave with smiles on their faces.
