Spencer Garrett Community Garden is located in Original Aurora in Spencer Garrett Park. The park has benefited Aurora for over thirty years, with the garden opening in 2012 when the Spencer Garrett Park was renovated by the City of Aurora, utilizing funds from the Adams County Open Space Fund and the Colorado Lottery. The park is named after the Aurora Police Chief who served from 1949 to 1971. The garden mostly consists of, and benefits, members of the surrounding community, many of whom are newly-arrived refugees or immigrants who grow plants and vegetables from around the world. The garden is located in the northwest corner of Spencer Garrett Park, on 17th Avenue and Joliet Street. The garden has 36 plots and covers a total of 6,400 square feet and is administered by Denver Urban Gardens. The garden's diverse culture and unique neighborhood position it to connect with and benefit the surrounding community. The Spencer Garrett gardeners enjoy holding art fairs for children in the community to make and hang art along the garden's fence, reflecting the garden's presence in the neighborhood for a long time to come. With community members of all ages, religions, backgrounds, and cultures regularly filling the park to play basketball and soccer, hold birthday parties and cookouts, and play on the jungle gym, Spencer Garrett Community Garden seeks to contribute to the transforming of this community into a thriving, joyous place to live.
