Established in 1995, the Beeler Street Community Garden has been fostering a sense of community in Original Aurora for over 18 years. The garden was created by Doris Emsley, a grandmother and community crime and grime fighter. The one acre garden is located on the 1600 block of Beeler Street off East Colfax Avenue and offers forty-two plots, each measuring 120 square feet. The garden is a melting pot of cultures with gardeners coming from the United States and all corners of the world including Nepal, Korea, Mexico, Bhutan and Burmese communities. The garden allows families who live in surrounding apartments the opportunity to take ownership of a small piece of land and the ability to grow their own cultural foods which may be difficult to find at the local grocery store. Five steering committee members lead the garden throughout the year, hosting gatherings with food, art, music and children’s activities. The steering committee seeks to engage children in gardening with instructional and playful activities. Aurora’s FallFest originated at Beeler Street Community Garden 18 years ago until its popularity exceeded the garden’s capacity. Beeler Street Community Garden is brought to you in partnership by The City of Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space, Original Aurora Renewal and Denver Urban Gardens. The Beeler Street Community Garden is a true oasis. It is a place for urbanites to connect, create a place of peace and beauty and share the joys of growing their own food.
